E3 2010: Mafia II Hands on and 3D Impressions

August 2, 2010

It was upsetting that both of EA’s Godfather video games weren’t able to offer a respectable mobster experience, even though the classic story and rich characters were already made for them. Mafia II doesn’t have names like Marlon Brando or Mario Puzo to lend credence to its tale of organized crime. On the other hand, it might not need them. Read more

E3 2010: Killzone 3 Hands On

July 21, 2010

There is a physical reaction any good first person shooter should elicit in the player. At first, the eyes widen and the jaw begins to slowly sag. Then a sharp exhale, accompanied by a hearty laugh filled with the same joy as Santa Clause’s infamous chuckle. All because the player is looking at the screen thinking: “I just did that!” This reaction could be called the ultimate high in male power-fantasy, but I actually saw it coming from a young woman playing Killzone 3 on the E3 show floor. E3 2010: All Points Bulletin Hands On

July 16, 2010

Since it’s entering the market of massive online gaming for the PC, Realtime Worlds’ All Points Bulletin gets measured against World of Warcraft a lot. However it’s a comparison the designers are anxious to brush off. APB is not about role playing, and it’s not about wizards or spells. It’s about hitting the streets as criminals or law enforcers, busting some heads and maybe even getting famous while doing it. Read more

PDP showcases E3 2010 line up

June 20, 2010

Besides debuting the Wii’s first voice chat headset, Performance Design Products had quite a few other accessories on display in their E3 booth.

The company has a number of deals with Disney this year, including special edition TRON: Legacy  controllers for the Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3. Inspired by the upcoming film, the controllers look pretty sharp with their glowing blue lines. The 360 and PS3 controllers will be retailing for $49.99, while the Wiimote is priced at $39.99. All three versions will be in stores a month before the movie arrives this fall. PDP also has an accessory line for Epic Mickey, the anticipated game by famed designer Warren Spector. Our favorite item in this line has to be the paintbrush shaped Wii nunchuck.

Just in time for the unveiling of Kinect, Microsoft’s motion control device, PDP has a series of accessories to help ease the new device into users’ living rooms. The company is manufacturing a stand for Kinect to rest on, as well as mounts which can be used to place it on the wall or on top of a TV.

Finally, for PS3 users frustrated with tediously typing out messages using the on screen virtual keyboard, PDP is releasing a wireless keyboard. Selling for $79.99, the keyboard will come bundled with a Bluetooth headset.

E3 2010 Portal 2

June 17, 2010

After getting a first glimpse at Portal 2, the original game just seems so domestic in comparison. Each puzzle took place in a sterile, secluded, and regulated environment. It was much like being a lab rat sent through a maze.

The first Portal was really a boot camp for bending the fabric of reality. So what does this make the sequel?

War. Read more
