WoW Journal: The Start of a Journey

March 31, 2004

If you have been following my thoughts during the last two E3 shows, you will know that I have been dying to get some time in Blizzard’s new MMOG World of Warcraft. Even though the game looked very polished and complete at the 2003 show, Blizzard wasn’t even ready to start Beta testing. However, the waiting is over and the testers are in the world. And let me tell you almost everything is perfect. Read more

Welcome to Eyewitness

March 22, 2004

Welcome to our brand new section we call Eyewitness. What will you find here? Currently, the plan for the section is for each of our MMOG team (that is Massively Multiplayer Online Game) to submit a diary of the events that happen to them inside the particular MMOG they are playing. This will provide some interesting ready because each we will be doing a little role playing with it to help further the characters we play and their environment.

Besides the diary, you will also be able to read articles about things like how patches affect the game, any gripes we have about a particular MMOG, and more.

This section will update often so be sure to check back soon.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

March 22, 2004

The Metal Gear series is a fairly old one that started on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. However, it wasn’t until the 1998 release of Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation that the series became massively popular. MGS was praised for both its cinematic storytelling and new stealth-action gameplay. The PlayStation 2 sequel was hotly anticipated. When it was finally released, it sported some fresh new gameplay mechanics, but most fans were very disappointed in the story. Silicon Knights (makers of Eternal Darkness), working with Konami, merged the new gameplay mechanics of MGS 2 into the original Metal Gear Solid for an impressive remake. Read more

Dark Age of Camelot: Trials of Atlantis

March 17, 2004

One of the big things that Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) has going for it is the ingenious way that it handles player against player combat. Instead of always worrying that someone is going to walk up behind you and start beating you down with a big stick, you only have those types of worries when you go out in the realm-versus-realm (RvR) zones. Keeping player combat and monster combat (PvE or player-versus-environment) separate allows players the luxury of picking what they feel like doing. To paraphrase the Almond Joy jingle: “Sometimes you feeling like smacking players, sometimes you don’t.” Read more

Beyond Good & Evil

March 17, 2004

Now days there are so many new games coming out all the time, it’s hard to know which ones to watch for, and a lot of great ones get passed over. Such is the case, it seems, with Beyond Good & Evil by Ubisoft. While it has been highly rated all over the gaming community and is available for all three current consoles and the PC, it’s surprising that BG&E didn’t produce more of a stir. Recently Ubisoft dropped the retail price to $20 on all platforms, due to poor sales. This is great news for gamers, but one has to feel bad for the developer and publisher who put so much effort into this completely original title. Read more

Champions of Norrath

March 9, 2004

Set in Norrath in a time well before the current events in EverQuest, Champions of Norrath begins with a summons for would-be heroes to help defeat the threat of the goblins and orcs of the land, and it takes these adventuresome souls threw danger-infested woodlands, dark dungeons, burning sands, frigid ice fields, underwater, and into the very realm of the gods. While there are those that you meet along the way (especially the bad guys) who would see you fail, it is up to you to find your way through the challenges and prove your worth. It does always help when you can pick right back up at your last saved spot when things go less than ideally, and they probably will along the way. Read more
