Xbox 360 Getting USB Storage
March 24, 2010
Joystiq has learned Xbox 360 users will soon be able to put game data on their own USB storage devices. The document, which Joystiq acquired from a senior software developmentengineerat Microsoft, says the new functionality will come in a system update this year.
Game saves, downloadable content, and XBLA games will all be able to be stored on any compatible device. The news is good for consumers trying to avoid Microsoft’s own more expensive hard drives but they haven’t quite broken free. The 360 will only allow up to 16GB of memory to be transferred to a USB device, no matter how much data it can hold.
So even if your external hard drive can hold 150 GB, only 16 of it can be used for 360 data. Also, a maximum of two USB devices can be used with the system, creating 32GB of extra storage.
With these restrictions, it’s clear that Microsoft doesn’t want consumers to completely abandon their own official hardware. Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation 3 has always had the ability to use external devices, with no limits on how much memory can be exported.
This year’s system update is expected to arrive sometime in the spring.
