Guitar Hero On Tour Decades

February 9, 2010

gh.jpgGuitar Hero On Tour Decades is the follow-up to the very popular Nintendo DS title Guitar Hero On Tour.  Despite the limitations of the Nintendo DS, Activision was able to squeeze the fun and excitement of Guitar Hero into a handheld device that wrapped itself around the DS hardware.  The original title proved to be a phenomenal success and development of a follow-up began immediately.  With Decades being so close to the original release, does it offer enough changes to make it worth a recommended purchase?

Like in the previous title, players will find the game bundled with a plastic device that wraps itself around your DS.  Players hold the DS like a book and grip the Guitar Hero hardware with the strap that goes around their hands.  You must then tap the button or series of buttons called for on the screen and strum away with the strum stylus or regular stylus as notes go by.  These movements can take some getting used to and players with larger hands, like me, may find their hands getting very cramped.  If you are one of the lucky players who don’t have aching hands while playing Guitar Hero On Tour Decades, there is a lot to like.

The experiencing of strumming along with your favorite songs is quite impressive.  The audio quality, when used with earphones, is very good.  Since the hardware only utilizes four buttons, the action may be a bit easier for the hardcore fan.  This shouldn’t stop anyone from experiencing the game at least once.  Players will find songs from the 70’s to today and there is a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.  Players won’t find any cover bands here though.  Guitar Hero On Tour utilizes the original versions of songs.  The only issue is that the cartridge cannot reproduce the same level of audio quality as the disk based games.  This is mainly due to space.  However, most players won’t even notice it.

Guitar Hero On Tour Decades doesn’t really bring anything new to the table—besides new tracks.  The game features the Career Mode, from the original On Tour, and the fun Dual Mode.  The biggest addition that Decades brings to the table is the ability to share songs with the original Guitar Hero On Tour title.  This allows you, and a friend, to play through the dual mode using both sets of song tracks. This is a wonderful addition to the franchise and hopefully something that continues to be utilized in future Nintendo DS incarnations of the franchise.

Guitar Hero On Tour Decades is something that is a little hard to recommend.  For me, with larger hands, I have a problem enjoying the game due to the pain in causes me playing.  For players who have smaller hands and are on the go a lot, Guitar Hero On Tour Decades is an excellent choice.  For all others, I recommend a rental before purchase.
