Metal Gear Solid 2

August 10, 2001

Now that the hype has died down it’s time for some serious playin’ to discover if a game can live up to the hype that surrounded it. Now some times over hype can kill a game. Should a game fail to deliver what was promised years previous to its release, well, let’s just say it ain’t pretty.

One would think that the magnitude of hype surrounding MGS2 would be impossible to come up from. Well, I have news for you… like myself and every other PS2 owner who bought the game on its release, the game is better then we could have imagined.

It’s not often that a game comes along that actually immerses one in its plot and characters. Ico had some incredibly strong imagery and prepared us well for MGS2. In the end MGS2 will go down in history has having the most complex plot in any game in history. Strong words possibly but play the game through and you’ll see what I mean.

I can’t go into too many details about the game’s plot as it would ruin every minute of it for you but let’s just say that that demo on the tanker is just the tip of a very large (read: epic) iceberg.

The game play is familiar to all of those millions who played the original for hours on end and then over again. There have been modifications all of which are improvements on an already stellar idea. The Items and Weapons lists (R2 & L2 respectively) are better then before as is the codec communication system. And then there’s the storyÖ·hich I can’t tell you about.

Being the first real “Sneaking” game, MGS2 offers players the ability to play a game without killing anyone. Of course I only read this I haven’t actually tried it out. In this day and age that is not only rare but impossible to find.

In the end MGS2 is more then a game and more then an experience. This is a game that brings you in to an intricate world full of cool characters and amazing environments. With a score composed by a Hollywood film composer it only adds to an already tremendous gaming experience.

Any PS2 owner without a copy of this game in their library is not a true PS2 owner…
