E3: The Saga Begins
By Ryan Schaefer | 05/10/06
The great journey began with an annoying buzz from my alarm clock dark and early this morning at 5AM. In what some might call a sober drunken stupor, I stumbled out of bed and did my best to get to the bathroom without collapsing in a still drowsy heap. I blindly reached around the door frame and bingo, light a la mode! Ow my eyes, I look away and see multicolored dots flashing in and out of existence, almost like Fantavision playing directly on my retina. “Yeah, it’s gonna be one of those days,” I think to myself as my vision slowly returns to semi-normal.

E3 06 Diary Day Two: Nintendo & Microsoft Press Conferences
By Kaleb Rutherford | 05/10/06
We awoke early to have some breakfast and plan out more coverage for E3. After hopping on to a subway to Hollywood and Highland, we headed over to the Kodak Center where our group parted and I went into the Nintendo Press Conference alone. Apparently Nintendo felt like it was okay for them to shut all of us out of the press conference except one. I made my way up to the nosebleed section and sat on the third from top row.

E3 06 Diary Day One: Square & Sony Press Conferences
By Kaleb Rutherford | 05/08/06
Today has been an extremely busy day. It started bright and early with a 5:30 AM wakeup and a ride to the airport. Once our Assistant Editor, Emily, and myself finally boarded the plane, we got one of the last remaining overhead storage bins. Then it began to rain and this caused a jammed packed plane to sit and be delayed waiting for the Texas storm to pass by. When it finally did, we were off to E3.

E3 2006: Here We Come
By Kaleb Rutherford | 05/06/06
This year is the ninth time I have personally gone to cover the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Better known as E3, this is the only place to be every year in May. Each year, journalists, developers, publishers, and gamers who manage to sneak in, go to LA to see what is new in the gaming industry. It is at E3 where we see new titles in development, hear major announcements, see wars between the “Big Three” console manufacturers, and it is our job at CVGames to cover all of this and deliver it to you in an easy to read format. The task of covering E3 is not at all easy, but we promise to work our butts off to deliver you the coverage you seek. This year with our new layout and format, I think you will find our coverage is easier to follow than before.

E3 2006 Predictions
By Kaleb Rutherford | 05/01/06
Here are my yearly E3 predictions. Remember, these are only predictions and are not fact. Nothing is set in stone in this industry. I can't be held responsible for anything that doesn't happen. However, if it does happen remember to give us the credit :)

Unanswered Sony, Nintendo, and MS E3 Questions
By Kaleb Rutherford | 04/30/06
CNN is reporting that Sony will not reveal the release date or price point for the PlayStation 3 at E3 during the Week of May 8. At the same time, they claim Nintendo will not reveal any of those details either. Could this actually be true?

E3 2006 MIA
By Kaleb Rutherford | 04/30/06
E3 is normally a time for companies to show off brand new titles while wowing and amazing show attendees. Unfortunately it appears that one title I was looking forward to seeing and one company will be absent from the show this year.

Monkey Enterprises Announces Sequel To Monkey 3000 Virtual Reality Console
By Will Chiu | 04/01/06
Monkey Enterprises has partnered up with TOTAL IMMERSION and Force Dynamics to develop a new console as the next installment in the Farmer Monkey Virtual Reality™ series (also known as FMVR™). The console as of now does not have an official name, but the project is codenamed "Pot Of Leprechaun Vomit At The End Of The Rainbow" and will be at least three times as powerful as the Monkey 3000 Virtual Reality Console™. TOTAL IMMERSION will be developing the software (which consists of the operating system, the Software Development Kit, and the built-in unannounced game to demonstrate the features of the console), while Force Dynamics will be developing the hardware for the console.

The Main Event
By Ryan Schaefer | 12/27/05
The so-called console wars have just heated up with the release of Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s Playstation 3 this month. As these two new contenders enter the ring to do battle with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 the future of gaming begins to look a little hazy. Which console will ultimately emerge the victor? It’s way too early to tell right now, but there are a lot of factors playing into this 3 way rumble and some are at the very core of the way we’ll define our entertainment for years to come. Sit down, grab a cold one and read on as I take a look at the new launches, what they mean for the industry and which console I personally feel will lead the charge in 2007 and beyond.

Xbox 360: Unmasked
By Ryan Schaefer | 11/25/05
So, it's finally here; the next generation of gaming was ushered in last week by the arrival of Microsoft's Xbox 360. The significance of this launch, I believe, is not really in the games themselves, but in the system's capabilities. I was definitely excited about getting my hands on this console, and luckily, I preordered a long time ago and was able to get one on launch day. However, I wasn't looking deep enough; I wanted the console so I could play cool new games with outrageous graphics. Oh, I got this, no worries there, but after spending some time with the system, I realized that it is much more than just pretty visuals and processor upgrades.

Xbox 360: Lets Do Launch
By Kaleb Rutherford | 11/11/05
The birth of a new console is met with much optimism and excitement. No matter how one feels about a given company, new technology is always something that drives gamers who are passionate for the industry. However, in all my years of covering games and being a hardcore gamer, I have never witnessed a launch of a new console with as much energy and domination as that of Xbox 360.

The Revolution Revealed
By Kaleb Rutherford | 09/30/05
The once mighty Nintendo has fallen on hard times lately. Starting with the Nintendo 64 and continuing on with the GameCube, Nintendo has seen sales of their console lag farther and farther behind the competition thus causing Third Party Developers to look elsewhere for a place to release their games. Things haven’t been all bad for Nintendo. Even in these dark days for the company, they have been able to post a profit almost every single quarter and they continue to release great First Party titles.

GTA Hot Coffee: Games Under Fire
By Kaleb Rutherford | 08/25/05
During the final days of finishing our July Issue of CVGames, the Grand Theft Auto San Andreas controversy began spinning out of control. I listened to politicians cry out as this was the reason why games should be policed by the Federal government, parent's screamed because they had unknowingly bought their children "pornographic material," and the ESRB made a historical move to replace the Mature rating of San Andreas with an Adults Only rating. Unfortunately it was too late for us to include any of this information in our last Issue with you. However, this issue is just too important to ignore.

On Becoming a Casual Gamer
By Zach McKeown | 08/10/05
Thinking about it, I thought this editorial was going to be a really personal one. It was going to be about the times when being a gamer went from a nerd-only thing to a system (or 2) in every household. However now I think the issue and transition that I've gone through in the past year or so is actually indicative of more of the videogaming audience than just me. And where the audience goes is where the industry goes.

Halo VS Halo
By Ryan Schaefer | 07/15/05
November 9th, 2004 is a date that any self-respecting gamer is familiar with; it was the day Halo 2 finally arrived on retail shelves. The Halo 2, successor to what many consider to be the greatest first person shooter of all time: Halo: Combat Evolved. As a launch title for the Xbox, Halo CE completely surpassed expectations. While there was a ton of controversy about Bungie being bought by Microsoft and shifting Halo CE over to the Xbox, no one can argue with the results. The game caught on like big hair in the 80's and soon everyone was playing this amazing new game. Never before had a console game supported so many players at one time, and across multiple systems no less. System link games brought a whole new way to play to the table and with Halo's near perfect gameplay a video game revolution had exploded in living rooms across the world.

Over the last few years, millions upon millions of people have had the chance to experience the numerous games from such companies as Electronic Arts, Sega Sports, 989 Sports, and countless others. The competition between these numerous companies has helped the sports genre achieve the status and magnitude that it is at today.
