Players: 1 to 4 Player Game | Release Date: 10/30/07 | Genre: Party
Buzz! is a game that has been extremely popular for Sony in Europe. Despite all of the success, it has taken them quite a while to bring the game over to the US. However, this holiday season Buzz!: The Mega Quiz was finally released--packaged with four Buzzers. Surprisingly this is one trivia game that is just a blast to play whether on your PlayStation 2 or on a backwards compatible PlayStation 3.
The first thing you need to do is pop in the disk and plug in the wired USB Buzzer into one of the USB ports. The one cable leads out to four Buzzers that can be used by up to four different people. You can purchase an additional set of buzzers for play with up to eight people or the others can use normal PS2 DualShock controllers. I should mention something about the wired Buzzers. It is a bit of a hassle to play with wires when all three next-generation consoles are now wireless. But since this is a PS2 game, it is something that can be overlooked.
Once you choose your game type, Buzz! plays out like a TV game show. Before each game begins, you will be given instructions as to how you are to answer. The best part of the game show layout is that the announcer, Buzz, is really funny. Although he can repeat some things from time to time, there are so many different categories and game types that this is something that can be easily overlooked.
With over 5,000 questions, there is plenty to keep you and a group of up to eight people having fun. However, the worst part about the game is the last round of the game--Final Countdown. Here your total score is transformed into a timer. The fastest answer will lead to bonus time and everyone will lose time depending on how fast they answer. This has led to many "from first to last" finishes.
The best part about Buzz! is that it is just a really fun and well done game show that you can pull out to make any party more fun. While I would prefer to play this game on the Wii or have a wireless Buzzer, hopefully the rumored PlayStation 3 version will give us this and more. Maybe then we can see a real good use downloadable content.
Until then, for forty bucks with four Buzzers, you won't find a better value for a trivia game than Buzz!: The Mega Quiz.
