Wada has this to say about the creation of Harvest Moon, Hometown Story, and comparisons to other titles:
"With Harvest Moon, I didn't really have the complete image of the game in mind from the beginning. I had to go through lots of trial of error to figure out what worked and what didn't. With Hometown Story, I have a very clear image of what I would like to put in the game, because I can now spend my time planning and directing the team.
Harvest Moon had three key elements: raising crops, taking care of animals and interacting with other characters in the village. But as the series moved on, there was more of a focus on the human relationships--especially getting married. When marriage eventually turned into the overall goal for some players, I started feeling a little awkward about that. With Hometown Story, I wanted to shift the focus from marriage to many different kinds of human relationships.
The biggest difference between Hometown Story and Animal Crossing would be the strong characteristics of the NPCs. In Animal Crossing, each character has a distinct personality, but in Hometown Story, you can't even compare the depth of human drama that each character will have."
Hometown Story looks to have enough charm to really be a standout title on the Nintendo 3DS platform. While it remains to be seen if it can equal the sales of Harvest Moon, Natsume is hopeful that the title will be successful. They even feature the artwork from the original artist from the first Pokemon title.
Hometown Story releases on the Nintendo 3DS later this year.
