Just Cause (Pre-E3 2006)

Developer: Avalanche Studios | Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Players: 1 Player Game | Genre: Action

Release Date: 09/27/06

Developer Avalanche is currently working on the somewhat ambitious project of an open-environment game, even more so because they’re working on four platforms at once: Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, and PC. They’ve titled the game Just Cause, which must be whatever is motivating the main character, Rico Rodriguez.

Rico is a CIA operative who is sent to a fictional island nation in South America. His goal is to somehow effect regime change and help rebels overthrow the country’s corrupt dictator.

The game takes place on a very large island and several smaller islands off its coasts. The game world is huge. There’s no point in describing the games’ similar features while avoiding mention of the actual name –the mechanics of Just Cause are similar to the GTA games. Rico can roam about on foot, with 3rd-person shooting abilities. He can also steal cars, boats, and aircraft. In addition, because he’s got the CIA backing him up, he can call for air transport at any time. This means that as the player, you can cover large distances quickly if you don’t feel like driving yourself.

Just Cause is not without its unique elements. Rico carries around a grappling hook that he can attach to all sorts of things, including moving vehicles. Combine this with his parachute, and you’ve got an instant parasail wherever you go. I happen to think that’s pretty cool. There will be a variety of objectives for the different missions that Rico takes. Assassinations, vehicle tailing, and more are all part of the job.

Interacting with different factions on the island will be another unique part about the gameplay. As the player, you’ll need to build alliances with various groups and perhaps make them do the fighting for you. Or if you want, you can get them to fight each other and sit back and watch the chaos.

If you’re a PC or 360 gamer, the graphics might not seem that impressive, though the sense of scale is pretty cool. Hopefully Avalanche will be able to clean up the graphics before Just Cause ships this fall. They’re also working on adding Havok physics to the game, which can certainly make these types of free-roaming games much more fun to play around in.

Just Cause looks like it will add some interesting elements to open-environment gameplay. Be on the lookout for more info as the game nears release.
