After seeing the game a few months ago, I was interested in seeing how the game has progressed while at this year’s E3. I have to say I was disappointed. Certainly the game looks decent and the gameplay is well on the way to emulating the Hitman franchise with a co-op style, but the little to no improvement that I saw doesn’t fill me with hope.
The nightclub scene I saw before was the same – lots of the same character models being repeated, the animations were not as smooth as they should be, and the enemy intelligence just doesn’t match up with other games that I have been seeing recently. That doesn’t mean the finished product will suck, but we are gong to be a bit more wary of the game until we do see the final release version.
While mostly the game will feature simply the two title characters, there are times when some more muscle is needed. We are told that the number of men that are in the squad has been changed to now total 5. X will bring the group together; B (along with moving the thumbstick to view an area) will have the mercenaries move to a specific position. Pressing Y while a person is selected will allow for an individual command.
One conflict that I saw this time which I hadn’t previously involved leaving the lobby of an office building (having already seen a nightclub and office boardroom both being shot to pieces). Upon leaving, the police, despite the fact that everybody was in plainclothes and not attracting attention drew the fire of the police. Yes, it’s possible to pick up tear gas canisters and throw them back, but that’s certainly not innovative. More interesting is the small “scope” mini-window that appears when the player is lined up in the crosshairs of a sniper.
If Kane & Lynch truly are going to be unleashed this year, these two guys need to go back to the shop. This is the game that perhaps some of the greatest potential – it just isn’t being tapped from what we are being shown so far.
Potential is just that - especially when unfulfilled. We have high hopes and expectations for this title.
