When Microsoft decided to make an attempt at rounding up Japanese talent for their upcoming Xbox 360 console, they created a partnership with Mistwalker--a new Japanese developer with some of the best RPG minds in the industry. We have already taken our first look at their first RPG called Blue Dragon but one title is not enough for this new developer. Besides Blue Dragon, we also have begun to learn some details about their second RPG for Xbox 360 called Lost Odyssey.
Players control Kaim who has been sentenced to live for a thousand years. You will play through his life that spans through many generations. Sakaguchi, the games creator, says he wants to take this idea of a character living for so long and do many new things in the RPG genre. From what we have been told, this will include a completely different story from the standard Japanese RPG. The focus here is going to be on an emotional story that will see Kaim love, lose love, get involved in serious conflicts, and have to deal with having such a long life. Lost Odyssey's story will be so intense that Sakaguchi claims that we will all cry when playing the game.
Mistwalker is also enlisting the help of other key parties in Japan to ensure that this original RPG is developed with the utmost care. Other people involved include Takehiro Inoue who is known for Slam Dunk and Vagabond, music composer Nobuo Uematsu, and another development studio called Feel Plus. Feel Plus is a group that was formed by former Square-Enix employees. Square-Enix has been the premiere RPG development studio in Japan for well over a decade. With the departure of so many key people to start up their own studios, could Microsoft be securing exclusive deals with a company that may one day soon overshadow the mighty Square-Enix? We may find an answer to that question very soon.
In the meantime, we will have to wait for more details on Mistwalker's second RPG on Xbox 360. Like Blue Dragon, I am looking forward to hearing more information on Lost Odyssey.
