Super Smash Bros Brawl

Developer: Game Arts | Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1 to 4 Player Game | Genre: Fighting

Release Date: 03/09/08

We attended a special behind-closed-doors presentation at the Nintendo booth just after the main E3 exhibits closed for the day. You may have seen some of the disappointment expressed on web forums over the lack of any Smash Bros. related announcements at Nintendo's big media briefing yesterday. Well, Nintendo addressed these concerns today by revealing a trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii.

The trailer featured a few familiar characters, but the exciting part for fans was the appearance of five new characters, including one that I would have never expected: Meta Knight (from the Kirby series), Pit (from a 1987 NES game, Kid Icarus), Zero Suit Samus (Samus without her Power Suit, as seen in Metroid Zero Mission), Wario (complete with fart attack), and Snake, yes the Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series.

The graphics seemed similar to the GameCube's Super Smash Bros. Melee with improved texture details. The backgrounds were more elaborate too. I may change my tune when I see a playable version in person, but Brawl's graphics don't seem to that drastically improved over Melee's.

The trailer showed off some new powerful moves for a few of the characters. Apparently, these extraordinary moves can only be unleashed after collecting a special item. Mario was able to set the whole stage ablaze, Link could drill into one character with a dozen or so consecutive sword slashes, and Kirby was able to don a chef's hat and boil another character alive. I'm sure we'll learn much more about the new features to the series as the game development progresses. Unfortunately, the game won't be seeing release until sometime in 2007; Last year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata mentioned that Smash Bros. would make it out for the Wii's launch. It is still confirmed for online play though.

The control details have not been completely hammered out yet, but the game will likely be controlled with a standard GameCube controller (the Wii as ports to accept them) or the newly revealed Virtual Console “classic” style controller rather than the motion sensitive Wii remote.

The most surprising part of the trailer was near the end when it when Snake popped out of his cardboard box disguise to join the Brawl. There are sure to be even more new characters in the game, and Nintendo mentioned the possibility of even more appearances by third party characters such as the much requested Sonic the Hedgehog. In fact, the way they spoke made it seem like the appearances of additional third party characters are not just possible, but probable.
