E3 2008: Mega Man 9

Developer: Inti | Publisher: Capcom
Players: 1 Player Game | Genre: Platform
Release Date: 09/22/08

It has been a long time since we last saw a real Mega Man game. In fact, it has been far too long in my opinion. To remedy this, Mega Man is currently in development for the Nintendo Wii. However, this version of Mega Man does not use 3d graphics and it isn't doing anything special with the Wiimote. Instead, the game is being developed as a Wiiware title and utilizes the same 8 bit engine as the original NES did. This is Mega Man 9.

While it is strange to think that a brand new Mega Man game is coming that looks like something from the early 90's, Dr. Wiley is once again up to trouble and Dr. Light is blamed. It is up to you to take control of everyone's favorite blue robot and clear Dr. Light's name. You will do this in a story told in 8 bit cinemas over eight levels.

Capcom is showing off two levels of Mega Man 9 in their booth. As with the classic Mega Man titles, this is simple run, jump, and fire, and will feature classic boss style encounters at the end of each level. Capcom is currently keeping details about all of the bosses hidden. However, we have been told that like in the earlier Mega Man games, the order you choose to play will be key as each boss has a different weakness.

In the levels shown at E3, you will face some challenges and obstacles. These are normally beaten through practice. While Mega Man 9 doesn't seem as difficult as some of the older titles, it does offer a challenge compared to the kind of titles we have on the market today.

Each individual level will offer its own theme based on the boss you are facing and will have the same type of catchy music that you may want to even hum to. Mega Man 9 is coming for Wiiware this fall and should be a very fun game. However, I still would like to see a new Mega Man title with new graphics. Oh well, it is nice to want things.
