E3 2011 Starhawk Impressions

Developer: Lightbox | Publisher: SCEA
Players: 1+ Player Game | Genre: Action
Release Date: TBA 2012

We got an early look at Starhawk during Sony's E3 2011 Press Briefing. And we are really excited to see more.

Warhawk, Sony's first attempt and pulling in Core users into the arms of their Sixaxis Controller, is making a second stop onto the platform. This time under the direction of Lightbox--built with many team members from the Warhawk group--and going into the vast final frontier of space.

Sony is keeping tight reigns on this 2012 title and hasn't shown anything other than what was shown during the press briefing. From what we have seen, Lightbox is planning for fast and furious space combat with bullets speeding past ships as they attempt to dodge and take down the enemy combatants.

Compared to Warrhawk, Starhawk is a much more expansive experience. To begin with, players will get a full single player campaign--something that was missing from Warhawk. Players will feel like they are in a Space Western as they explore the galaxy with the unique look and feel of the characters and environments within the world of Starhawk.

Levels are being designed to be very open and steer clear of the linear progression players complained about in Warhawk. This will provide large scale attacks whether they occur on foot or in the variety of vehicles found throughout the world. But like Warhawk, Starhawk will have a slight learning curve.

With the lack of information surfacing on Starhawk at E3, we really don't anticipate this title coming any earlier than next late summer to fall. As of now, Sony will only commit to a planned "2012" release. Oh vague release dates, how we loathe you.

Starhawk should be a title firmly planted around the Teen Rating for Violence and intense action. So this should make the title suitable for most ages. Of course, these observations are subject to change as we learn more about the title. Keep reading CVG for the latest.
