Kingdom Hearts Unchained X Review
Players: 1+ Player Game | Release Date: 04/07/16 | Genre: Strategy
The game has done a fine job of releasing new stories and characters. Having four different quest types also helps keep things fresh and new. The story quest stays the same, while the Special, Event, and Coliseum refreshes daily, weekly, and monthly. Different materials that you need to level up medals and keyblades can be found on different days of the week so if you miss a day that you need something then you have to wait a week. This is both something that I enjoy and get frustrated with. The cost (AP) of the missions is another thing that I find myself getting frustrated with at times, lower lever stories and missions tend to be fairly reasonable, but as you get further into the game you have to strategize how to spend your AP and then wait for it to build back up.
One complaint that I have heard is you need to spend money to be good at the game. However I do not think this is a necessity. If you wish to be good at the game, but do not want to put in the time and effort into it, then yes, you will need to spend money. I have been playing since the start of the game and have not bought anything. My characters are not the strongest of my team, but I have gotten through the story and side missions with little problem and am in the top 5 of my party’s total power. That being said, I do wish there was an alternative way of gaining jewels. You earn some for opening the game (once per day) and they will randomly drop--but not very often. You have to really save up your jewels and decide before you make a choice to spend 3,000 on a pack of medals.
One of the game’s features that I was unsure about is joining a party. I am always hesitant when joining a party/team on games because I don’t like the feeling of if I miss a day or two that I am letting my team down. I quickly realized that if I missed a day or two, it would not directly impact my team. By participating in this dynamic, I am able to talk to, help out, and share medals of people who are at all stages of gaming. From your casual players who are playing a few times a month, to the hardcore player who plays it daily, and everything in between--all skill levels and player types can come together to help each other with medal sharing or teaming up to defeat a raid boss. One thing I am always cautious about is how much of my personal information will be shared when joining a team. In the case of KHUx, the only thing that the other players see is the username that I have choose for myself and my stats. There is also a chat feature that allows our team to communicate about things with KHUx, as well as other games that we are playing.
The characters and turn-based battles are some of my favorite parts of KHUx. Getting to see and play both heroes and villains that I grew up watching on television and in movies is a pure joy. This makes the time spent gathering medals enjoyable when I upgrade characters like Sora, Beast, or even The Evil Queen.
Overall, while I think there are still some improvements to be made in the game, I feel Kingdom Hearts Unchained X is one of the best mobile games that I have ever played. The story, graphics, and combat make you forget that you are playing a mobile game and keep you coming back to explore further.
