I love my iPhone. In fact, I have no idea how I ever survived without Apple’s magic and revolutionary cel phone. That said, if there is any drawback to the device, it is very susceptible to drops. And when drops occur, bad things happen… very bad things. Luckily for you, there is a way to make your iPhone nearly bulletproof. Say hello to the Otterbox Defender.
Available in several stylish colors, the Otterbox Defender is your answer to protect your iPhone. We opted for the black color with our review unit. The philosophy behind the Otterbox is to provide the ultimate protection for your device. To accomplish this, users put their iPhone into a protective hard plastic shell. This shell features a protective window for the camera, on the back, and a protective window for the screen, on the front.
Once the plastic shell has been snapped firmly in place, step two is to place the rubber case over the hard plastic shell. This one-two punch of protection completely protects your device from anything except liquid, and in some cases, nuclear warfare.
The OtterBox Defender line also comes with a companion clip. Once you have the protective case in place, the clip provides another layer of protection. You place the phone, in the clip, screen side first. This gives a second layer of screen protection with the protective window screen and the clip.
All of this may sound fantastic and a little unrealistic that a case can protect your phone this well. In my real world testing, I have been absolutely thrilled with the OtterBox Defender. Scratches, bumps, bruises, and fear of my iPhone to break, yet again, have been completely negated now. Dropping my OtterBox protected iPhone results in the device practically bouncing into my hands. In fact, I would worry more about the ground breaking before your device does.
Even though the OtterBox Defender is a great case, there are a few drawbacks. The first is apparent once you hold the device in your hands. The OtterBox makes your sleek and sexy iPhone bulky and not nearly as pocketable as before. For me, and the millions of folks who have a tendency to “be rough on your phones,” this is easily overlooked. You simply have to weigh the option of: do I want a slim phone that I will probably break in half or do I want it to survive being run over by a tank?
For some, the case bulk will lead to issues with accessories you may have around your house and car. I am a big user of the TomTom App and dock. When I am going to be in the car for longer than an hour, I remove my OtterBox Defender so I can have my GPS. This is a slight annoyance but something I have learned to live with.
The other issue with the OtterBox is the built in screen protector film over the front of the device. I absolutely despise this portion of the OtterBox Defender. In fact, I hate it so much that I ended up removing it and adding my own film in the form of an Invisible Shield to protect the device. Once I made this modification, I was completely happy with the OtterBox.
To be fair, most OtterBox Defender users don’t mind the screen protection. Though it causes some mild bubbling and “rainbow effects” on the screen. They want full protection. So your mileage may vary with this complaint.
Overall, I am completely thrilled with the OtterBox Defender. This is the only case I ever want to use for my iPhone. The only time I can ever foresee me having it out of the OtterBox is when I need to use accessories, like the TomTom or home docking devices, and when I need to put my iPhone in an arm band to go for a jog. I completely recommend this product and advise you to get your iPhone protected… before it is too late.
