Although many have attempted to create a good Real Time Strategy experience on the console, almost every single title has failed to come anywhere near the quality and fun that players can find on the PC platform. This all changed with release of Battle of Middle Earth II on the Xbox 360. Though it was not perfect, it quickly became the standard for how Developers should make RTS games on a console--without a mouse and keyboard. Taking the lessons they learned from Battle for Middle Earth II, EA is now ready to bring the latest, and much anticipated, installment in the Command & Conquer series to the Xbox 360. But the question remains--can they continue their RTS console success?
Command & Conquer is one of those franchises that I have fond memories of. Back when the world was using dial-up to connect to the Internet, I used to play head to head games with friends. Not only has broadband changed our gaming experiences online, but the technology used in titles has also increased dramatically. However, despite these changes, a decision was made to return the series back to its FMV roots by enlisting the actor that plays the evil leader of Brotherhood of Nod (NOD), Kane. As a longtime fan of the series, just seeing Kane on the screen again makes me excited about the third installment of C&C.
In Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, players choose to take part on either the NOD or GDI (Global Defense Initiative) side. Depending on who you choose, you will have a different set of missions, objectives, and FMV cinemas. Okay, this is sounding just like every other Command & Conquer game... Well not exactly. A new wrinkle has been added to equation as an alien race called the Scrin are now in the mix and each side must deal with them. As in prior titles, the Tiberium is a key element to the story. This time around this crystal resource is expanding at such a high rate that it is quickly overcrowding the planet. With all these elements, it is time for you to command your side to victory.
Although the hardcore C&C fans will probably spend their time playing Tiberium Wars on the PC, the Xbox 360 version will feature a few exclusive modes that won't be found outside of the home console. One of these features is support for the Xbox Live Vision Camera. Of course, having a webcam on the PC is nothing new but supporting a webcam in a game is something that hasn't happened very often. My only fear is that the camera attachment has not sold enough units to make this an option most 360 will take advantage of. But for those who have the necessary hardware, this should be a very cool addition to the game. I have always felt like having your face inside the game would add another dimension to the gameplay. Maybe this is a sign of things to come for the Xbox Live Vision Camera? Another feature that will remain exclusive the the Xbox are some multiplayer game modes. these include Capture and Hold, Siege, King of the Hill, and Capture the flag.
In its current form the Xbox 360 version of Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is far from complete. This is in complete contrast to how polished the PC version is. The usual promises are being made about the game will ship with better graphics, less slowdown, and the same polish of the PC version. However, it isn't there yet. Despite this, after seeing how Battle for Middle Earth II turned out, I trust that C&C 3 will be made just as fun and playable.
Unless there is a delay, the Xbox 360 version of Tiberium Wars should hit your favorite retailer around May. For those of you who can't wait that long, the PC version is just around the corner. Play one or play both--just watch out because Kane and the NOD Forces will take you down no matter what platform you are playing on!
