E3 2009: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

Developer: Level 5 | Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1 Player Game | Genre: Puzzle

Release Date: 08/24/09

Developer Level 5 had the second of their three planned Professor Layton titles at E3. Following closely to the formula that made the first game successful, we spent some time with Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box at E3.

In the Diabolical Box, Professor Layton and his ever faithful sidekick, Luke, have to solve the mystery that not even Professor Layton's mentor has been able to solve. They have to open the Elysian Box without it killing them.

The formula retains the charm and character of the first Professor Layton by having you explore not only a single city but many locations. You will encounter a variety of puzzles that can range from easy to extremely difficult. But as with the first title, players will find a variety of clues and hints that can be obtained simply by searching the environment around you.

Players will come across some familiar faces but since the game takes place in a variety of locations, you will meet many new friends to challenge your wit with Puzzles. Players control the game almost exclusively with the stylus and if you can manage to make it to the end--players will have experienced 150 brand new puzzles. Look for Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box on August 24 for your DS.

ESRB Details: - Alcohol Reference, Mild Violence - This is a puzzle game in which players follow Professor Layton and his protégé as they attempt to solve a mystery surrounding a strange antique. Players solve puzzles, explore areas around a town, and earn 'Hint Coins' by tapping on conspicuous objects. The storyline sometimes includes discussions about murder or death: a box that is infamous for killing anyone who opens it; a colleague that dies under curious circumstances; a police inspector pointing out a possible cause of death (e.g., 'What do we have here. A murder? Or was the crime self-inflicted?'). In one cutscene, Professor Layton has a sword fight with another character, though neither combatant is injured. One puzzle includes a text hint that mentions villagers toasting with red wine and dancing until late in the night.
