Ninety Nine Nights (Pre-E3 2005)

Developer: Q Entertainment | Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Players: 1 Player Game | Genre: Action

Release Date: 08/15/06

If there is something the Xbox 360 needs, it is some big titles in the US market and elsewhere around the globe. At the recent MTV Xbox 360 event, Microsoft showed off the new Xbox 360 but the only game that was really shown in playable form was Perfect Dark Zero. While this title may end up being great, it has a long ways to go at this point. Is Xbox 360 doomed to launch without any big titles? If Q Entertainment has their way, their Ninety Nine Nights will be the killer ap for X360.

Q Entertainment is a relatively new Japanese development house started up by the creative genius behind the underappreciated Rez. They also are the studio that brought the PSP the incredibly addictive Lumines and will soon have Meteos on the Nintendo DS. Securing a deal to have this studio make games for the Xbox 360 was a very wise move that should result in some great titles over the life of the console. This is one area where Microsoft looks to succeed with X360 in Japan where they failed before.

Ninety Nine Nights was recently shown off in Japan and it received much praise. The details of the story are not clear right now. But you are in Feudal Japan and have to go through ninety nine nights of darkness before the sun rises on the hundredth day due to a stone of power. I am not sure exactly how more involved the story will be but at least we can see where they came up with the title.

The story will play out by you selecting different units to control. Depending on who you control, the story and game will change. Microsoft and Q Entertainment are saying that this a brand new way to tell a story and encourage replay value for players.

Ninety Nine Nights is being created in Japanese, English, and Korean all at once. They have at least two translators on hand at all times to ensure the development proceeds through all three languages at the same time. This should ensure a launch in almost all markets at the same time.

Visually this is one of the best Xbox 360 titles seen to date. If you took a battlefield from Dynasty Warriors, removed the fog, and added in several thousand people on the screen, you would get the idea of how the gameplay looks in this title. And that is just if you have the camera close up. The number of armies seen could even be greater if the camera zooms out. All this is running at a smooth sixty frames per second.

Q Entertainment has been able to create a masterpiece with this early demo of Ninety Nine Nights. They claim that the Xbox 360 is actually more powerful than they were first told and they should be able to do even more with the system. Hopefully this means that in the coming months we will be even more blown away by what is already shaping up to be one of the brightest titles for the Xbox 360. This is definitely one title to keep a watch out for.
