For PopCap, this is their chance to prove that the original wasn’t a fluke and can be a franchise that people will sink money into. This time around, the game is Free to Play. This gives PopCap, and their parent company EA--who spent 750 Million Bucks on them--a chance to continually add new content to the game. Of course, being Free to Play means once you are “hooked” that you will need to open up your wallet in order to keep progressing. During the last four years, where fans have been begging for a sequel to PvZ, people have been eager to give PopCap their money for more plants and more zombies. It will be interesting to see what kind of revenue this game will generate.
In Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time, Crazy Dave, the neighbor with a pot on his head, wants to buy more Tacos from you for $1,000 each. Why does he want to buy more tacos from you? Because he is CRAZY!!! In order to feed his Taco hunger, he builds a time machine to go back and buy them over and over and over again. Crazy Dave isn’t the brightest bulb and he accidentally sends the player to ancient Egypt. In Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time, you will be defending your lawn, and even ships, from the evil “Brain Eating” zombies throughout different time periods.
During the first five levels, when transported back in time to Egypt, you will learn how to play. Egypt contains 11 mandatory levels and 10 optional levels. Each world has around 22 levels to play and 10 of these should always be optional. LIke in the original, there are also bonus games with modes like an endless wave of Zombies.
During a game, players can earn a variety of different things to help them in their quest to kill the zombies before their brains get eaten. One of these is the “power pinch.” This gives you the ability to pinch the head off a zombie with the classic two-finger gesture. “Power toss” is another gesture you can earn with the ability to flick a monster off the screen. There will be plenty of elements like this to get the player directly involved in the on-screen action. PopCap hopes this will counter any complaints people had about certain gameplay elements being slow.
Players can also earn temporary powerups during a game. These include things like plant food. Plant food gives a plant an upgraded ability without the need for you to spend your Sun Currency on it. However, it only last for a few seconds. But this is a chance to turn a standard Pea Shooter into a Triple Pea Shooter during a stressful wave.
The game will initially launch on July 18, 2013, for the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone platforms and utilize in-app purchases. PopCap promises to add new worlds, plants, zombies, and levels over time. These will be able to be purchased with in-game currency or with real money. From what we have seen, that date can’t come fast enough. I wish I had a time machine just to travel to July 18 now. You will be hooked too so beware!
