PSP: Lets do Launch!

To celebrate the release of the PSP, some larger store chains selling the PSP at 12 AM on 3/24/2005. However, most stores I have seen in the DFW Metroplex area opened a few hours earlier than usual and began selling the PSP at 8 AM today. I visited a local Gamestop store and spoke to the manager about what he thought about the PSP, the amount of pre-orders he had received, and how he thinks the system is going to do against Nintendo DS and future Nintendo handhelds.

Due to some concerns with sharing this information with me, he will have to remain anonymous. He told me that his specific store has sold a dozen Nintendo DS units in the past week and that the sales on the DS compared to the PSP at launch were about the same. However, that assessment comes only an hour into the first day of PSP availability. Where he only received a handful of DS units, his store had double that amount of PSPs to get the total number of units at around 30. No extra PSP units were available at his store, any other Gamestop stores in the area, or any EB Stores. Other retail chains were already selling out of the stock they had too. Each Best Buy was supposed to receive about 50 PSP units per store.

At Gamestop, I looked over the available DS and PSP games with the manager and we could already see a larger number of titles that were getting higher scores and offered much better gameplay than anything the Nintendo DS had to offer. In fact, after picking up a couple of items in the store, I attempted to purchase a new DS title but could not find any titles worth picking up.

Comparing the two consoles with each other, I would say that the best DS titles currently available are:

  • Wario Ware Touched
  • Feel the Magic
  • Mario 64 DS
  • Yoshi Touch & Go

Of the games we have played on the PSP, I rank these titles as the best on the system:

  • Wipeout Pure
  • Metal Gear Acid
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On
  • Lumines
  • Ridge Racer
  • Bortherhood of the Blade

Of these titles mentioned we have yet to review a few of them but what we have seen and played of them lead me to believe that they will all be able to be included on a "best of" list. This would make the PSP have many more great titles available on Day 1 than the Nintendo DS has had in its first four months of availability.

Sony has been hyping this little handheld for months and months. Once you take a look at how beautiful the screen is and how great the games look and play, it won't be hard to see why. It is interesting to note that even though we haven't reviewed all the launch titles yet for the PSP that the average of scores from reviewers across the web give just about every single PSP game a higher score than any of the Nintendo DS titles released. While I am still a fan of the Nintendo DS and have faith that Nintendo and third parties can bring some unique gameplay experiences to us via the system, I think Nintendo should be a little worried.

In the past, Third Parties have released titles on Game Boy Advance because it was the only system in town. However, will they continue to make games for the GBA or Nintendo DS when there is a more powerful and better looking machine available in the PSP? We should get a better idea of this once E3 arrives and we can further examine the number of titles available for both the PSP and Nintendo DS. But if I was a betting man I would put money on this: The only way Nintendo is going to be able to compete with the PSP is to release a new Game Boy system. But doing so anytime soon will probably upset the users that just purchased the Nintendo DS system.
